Learning Contract

Q HRMG 490 Learning Contract Assignment Assignment Overview: In this assignment, you will create at least 4 measurable learning outcomes using the directions/guidelines and the template below which will help you to reflect on the learning achieved throughout the internship. Measureable Learning Outcomes: The What, Why and How What do we mean by Measurable Learning Outcomes? Measurable Learning Outcomes (MLOs) refer to a set of statements which clearly and precisely describe what it is you intend to learn and accomplish during your experience. Why have Learning Outcomes and a Learning Contract in the Internship? Internships, while primarily on-site experiences, are also academic courses. Learning in internships is primarily accomplished through the process of reflection on clearly articulated goals. Developing specific learning outcomes which combine Excellence System and course outcomes as well as specific duties of the internship position description help to focus learning during the experience. How do I develop and write my Learning Outcomes? 1. Read the article titled “Learning Contract Article.” 2. Perform a careful review of your internship position description with your site supervisor, noting areas where you feel you can gain new skills, increase your knowledge or improve your attitudes or behaviors. Avoid broad general statements and confine your objectives to ones that can be accomplished during a single term. 3. Review the Excellence System and course outcomes as well as the duties of your internship 4. Combine these outcomes to draft at least four new measurable learning outcomes. Usually, MLOs combine three major variables or components to form a single sentence which can help to define all aspects of the outcome. 1. GOAL/OUTCOME — the desired outcome or desired achievement 2. ACTIVITY—the proposed action to achieve the goal/outcomes and a TIMEFRAME (or expected completion date) 3. ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION — the stated method of measurement which often includes a FORECAST (or proposed level of accomplishment or achievement) and who will assess completion. EXAMPLE: By the end of the semester (TIME FRAME) I will learn about project management (GOAL/OUTCOME) by planning and implementing one event (ACTIVITY), which will raise $500 for the organization (FORECAST)* as evaluated by my supervisor (ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION) A very important element in the development of MLOs is often called the ACTION WORD. There are several such action words used in the example above (planning, implementing, and raising). Action words are found in all MLOs because they lead to measurable outcomes. Other examples of action words are: demonstrate, describe, draw, discuss, operate, perform, summarize, recognize, etc. *It is important to try to indicate the level of achievement which you expect to obtain, expressed whenever possible in numerical terms (increase speed by 15% or raise $500). Be sure you have enough knowledge, skill, time, and freedom at work to accomplish your objectives. Goals should cover four areas: Academic goals: What concept that you’ve learned about in the classroom would you like to apply to your internship? Identify the concept and the class(es) where you’ll be making the connection between the classroom and the workplace. Professional goals: What do you wish to learn about the professional work place? What insights into potential careers want to gain? What contacts do you want to establish for future advancement? Leadership & teamwork goals: How will you gain leadership and/or teamwork skills in your internship? How will you align team member’s skills and abilities to team assignments? How can you motivate team members? How are team goals established? Personal goals: In what ways do you want to experience personal growth in your internship and what activities are likely to contribute to this growth? Assignment Specifics: Use the information above to construct at least one measurable learning outcomes in each area, with a maximum of five total outcomes, for the internship and list these in the Learning Contract Template below. See the sample contract for ideas and examples. You should review these outcomes with your internship site supervisor. ? Sample Learning Contract GOALS/OUTCOMES ACTIVITIES ASSESSMENT/MEASURES 1.
